By Ken Woods

We asked coach Linzy Davis to tell us how he ranks players. And how he selects players for the USA Elite National Teams.  Coach Davis has won 5 World FIBA Tournament titles. Coach Davis is well-known and respected around the world among national team coaches. Coach Davis gives his insight on the freshman class.  "If I were selecting a team from the state of Georgia to compete in the World Championships in Europe, this is how I would select the team in ranking order with a plus minus 5 slot ranking, which means, a player ranked number 6 could be a number one player, and that player could be a number 11 ranked player. Many of the players in the USA have similar ability.  It is a matter of knowing what you need to have perfect chemistry."

Willie Clayton is the number one freshman player in the state of Georgia.  He played a key role on the USA 22u team that finished 3rd in the 22u World Championship, Tourcoing, France.  He earned Freshman Player of the Year for his class.  He earned Region Player of the Year, regardless to class.  He is the best athlete in his class, and always plays hard regardless of the competition.  He is one of the PERFECT 10 players' on the Team Georgia Elite 2012 Dream Team, which has won the 15u Big Shot Championship, AAU 15u Super Regional  Championship, AAU 16u Super Regional Championship, and the Georgia AAU 16u State Championship.  Coach Davis has already invited Willie Clayton to play on the 19u Elite USA National Team, which plays in the Douai World Championship, Douai, France... Jordan Adams is a winner.  Davis has followed him since he was 8 years old.  He plays hard and has all the skills.  He is a very good defender and refuses to lose.  He has great leadership skills, and proves it with his play...  Jordan Price is a very good offensive player.  He knows how to score.  He played for the 13u USA Elite National Team, coach by Davis, and won a 13u world championship in Ardre, France... Tony Parker is another player that coach Davis has coached.  Parker has great footwork and multiple moves inside.  He also has a nice touch out to 15 feet...  Drew Davis is the son of coach Davis, and coach says Drew is like a BOX JELLY FISH, he looks harmless but he is lethal.  He earned best young player in the 22u World Championship, Tourcoing, France.  He helped lead the USA to the final 4 when he was inserted into the game against France, midway through the third quarter, and scored 11 points, before a sellout crowd, finishing 4 of 4 from the floor including three 3-pointers, and no turnovers.  Coach Davis says Drew is a very efficient player.  He plays great position defense.  He takes care of the ball, and he makes his shots from long-range.  He's a player that gets compared to Stephen Curry due to his late growth spurt.  Drew also has won a 15u World Championship in Switzerland, and a 13u World Championship in Ardre, France.  Coach Davis will have him play on the USA Elite 22u Team and the USA Elite 19u team until he attends college... Stanton Davis, has a World Championship under his belt.  He played on the USA Elite 13u Team, that won the World Championship in Ardre, France.  Stanton has emerged as a top combo-guard in the USA.  Stanton has a great perimeter game.  He can nail the 3-point shot.  He can jet through the middle of the lane and finish with a two-hand dunk.  He can run the point and play the wing with precision...  Keenan Palmore has been battle tested at the point-guard position.  He was a member of the USA Elite 22u National Team.  He got in games and learned a lot.  He is a very tough guard with a ton of upside.  He is long, tough and effective.  He is a great penetrator and he has a very good perimeter shot... Kyle Meyer is a smooth scoring big man.  He can scored inside and also take you outside.  He is a great finish guy... Robert Carter is a big guy with a lot of skills.  He has 3-point range.  He has a good mid-range game.  And he has a lot of good moves around the basket...  Evan Nolte is a bigtime player who can shoot the cover off the ball...  Mark Jones is a dangerous point-guard who does a great job of running a team.  He is also an excellent defender.  He has a good midrange shot out to 3-point land.  He has good speed and quickness...  Damien Wilson is the real deal.  He has deadly 3-point range.  He attacks the basket and defends well.  This guy is definitely high D-1, and a special player...  Clarence Reese, is one of the top point guards in the country.  He is very strong.  He is a smart player.  He attacks the basket and plays unselfish...  Quentin Edwards is another player that coach Davis has had a chance to develop.  Quentin is a deadly wing-forward.  He is very athletic...
